Although celebrated for his work in three dimensions, Calder was also a prodigious painter. In the 1940s, as he became increased his sculptural output he also delved into gouache painting. Some of these works on paper explore concepts that the artist would later develop into mobiles and stabiles. The volumetric, intertwined forms in Bollards express dynamic energy in two dimensions and foreshadow aspects of his large-scale stabiles such as Trois Bollards (1970) and Bollard (1970).
