Alexander Calder "Medusa" Hoodie
This heavyweight cotton fleece hoodie features Alexander Calder's Medusa (1930) embroidered on the front panel, with contrasting embroidery detail of the wire sculpture. Calder's sculptures are intended to move and be viewed from different angles, and we chose to render this movement through by using two colors of slightly offset embroidery. There is a custom rubberized label with the artist's signature on the bottom rib.

In the 1920s Calder developed a new method of sculpting - by bending and twisting wire, he essentially “drew” three-dimensional figures in space. In these unprecedented massless sculptures, Calder carved expressive lines from the void. Medusa depicts Calder’s wife, Louisa James, whom he met on board a ship in June 1929 while traveling to New York from Paris. “On the De Grasse, when I first met Louisa, she had a lot of fairly short hair and the wind was always up, which is true of any boat, so her hair took the form of snakes and I dubbed her Medusa,” he remembered. As the portrait rotates in suspension, the vibrations of the wire lines and their shadows create a multidimensional liveliness.
