In the 1920s Calder developed a new method of sculpting - by bending and twisting wire, he essentially “drew” three-dimensional figures in space. In these unprecedented massless sculptures, Calder carved expressive lines from the void. Romulus and Remus is one of three large-scale wire works from 1928 incorporating mythological themes—the other two being Hercules and Lion and Spring. After the sculpture’s debut in New York, Calder caused a stir by walking down Fifth Avenue with the nearly eleven-foot-long she-wolf under his arm. When asked if he considered it a work of art, he was quoted as saying, “I shouldn’t have made her if I didn’t.”
