Although celebrated for his work in three dimensions, Calder was also a prodigious painter. In 1953 he spent a year in Aix-en-Provence, where he set up a makeshift studio for paper paintings. Calder recalled, “I would moisten the paper with a flow of water and wait till it dried a bit but not too much; then I would draw on it with a brush full of China ink—this would develop clouds and trees and fungi and things of that nature.” He also made high-contrast, monochromatic illustrations in ink with crosshatched stripes.
